The East Side of Santa Fe is widely considered one of the city’s most desirable and historic residential areas. It offers a combination of history, culture, architecture, and natural beauty that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Some of the things that make the East Side special include:

  • Historic character – Many homes date back decades or even centuries, with authentic adobe construction, thick walls, vigas, courtyards, and architectural details that define Santa Fe’s heritage.
  • Canyon Road – The East Side is home to the famous Canyon Road, one of the nation’s premier art districts, with galleries, sculpture gardens, restaurants, and cultural events within walking distance.
  • Walkability – Residents can often walk to Santa Fe Plaza, museums, restaurants, and galleries while still enjoying a quiet residential setting.
  • Mature landscaping – Unlike many newer neighborhoods, the East Side features large cottonwoods, mature gardens, winding lanes, acequias, and lush compounds hidden behind adobe walls.
  • Mountain access – The neighborhood sits at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, providing quick access to hiking trails, skiing, and outdoor recreation.
  • Privacy and prestige – Many of Santa Fe’s most significant estates, historic compounds, and high-value properties are located on the East Side. The area has long attracted artists, writers, collectors, and business leaders.
  • Cultural atmosphere – Living there often feels like being immersed in Santa Fe’s artistic and historic identity. Museums such as the Museum of International Folk Art and Museum of Indian Arts and Culture are nearby.

Compared with areas like Eldorado or North Hills, the East Side typically offers:

  • More history and walkability.
  • More mature landscaping and established neighborhoods.
  • Smaller lots on average, but often more character.
  • Higher property values per square foot.
  • A stronger connection to Santa Fe’s cultural and artistic life.

For many longtime Santa Fe residents, the Historic East Side is considered the neighborhood that most embodies the city’s unique blend of art, architecture, history, and landscape.
